In addition to the aforementioned devices and services, the building is also equipped with a passive fiber network to provide high-speed Internet access while using less power. We want a library of the future that is flexible, built for now and built for the future, said Deborah Barrow, San Diego library director. One of the early technology decisions we made was Optical LAN, a future-proof backbone to allow the library to expand as future changes occur. In a public building, the flexibility, the cost and the energy savings all need to be considered, and thats what weve done here. RELATED Super Wi-Fi Pilot Hits Libraries Around the Country As the needs and wants of people change, government adapts its services, and public libraries like San Diego's are a reflection of that. But maintaining a large network with many connected devices and a BYOD policy can be costly and difficult to manage in traditional settings, said John Hoover, senior product manager at Tellabs, the company that provided the librarys network infrastructure. Hoover said that even though the library is three times larger than the facility its replacing, and serving three times as many people, the crew that manages the technology infrastructure has not needed to grow. He emphasized the value of a passive optical network (PON) over both active optical networks and copper-based networks for PONs ability to reduce operating and capital costs, while also being easy to manage. Initial cost analyses show that the city will save 80 percent on operational costs, thanks to reduced power consumption granted by passive networking, Hoover said, while capital expenditures will be reduced between 50 and 70 percent. They can do that because of less moving parts, less electronics, and then its managed centrally from an open management system where you do things at a desktop computer, he said.

Recount likely in Virginia attorney general race after Democrat's narrow win certified

Also Can condo owner insist on having an electric vehicle charging station? Answer: The quick answer is yes, but not exactly. The basic rule is that when an attorney represents the board, the fiduciary duty is owed toward every board director, and the board as a whole has the ultimate say on all issues. But the board is a group, and whenever a lawyer represents a group of people any group (the board being just one example) the attorney has the right to ask that all communications go through designated directors. Otherwise, the lawyer could be receiving continual and conflicting communications. Boards should be mindful of the possibility of manager interference with board duties. The manager is not a board director and is not the client. Nor can the manager take on the role of legal liaison between the board and its attorney because, unlike the board, the manager has conflicting interests and allegiances. The fact that the manager undoubtedly works for more than one association may give rise to conflicts. More important, while the manager may recommend incurring additional legal charges, he or she does not have to pay any part of the association's legal fees.

''I'm concerned about the lack of uniformity, that there be no differences in any of the localities in how votes are counted," he said. In Fairfax County, for example, Republicans complained the local election board extended too much time for voters to appear to argue that their provisional ballots be counted. "I personally have concerns about Fairfax County and the process of their canvass," Judd said. While the board's role in the election is over, he said he would meet with election officials in that heavily Democratic county to ensure there is no confusion in the future. Fairfax County election officials insisted then they were hewing state election law, and they repeated that assertion on Monday. "My response is basically what we've been saying," said Brian Schoeneman, the secretary of the Fairfax County board. "The Fairfax County Electoral Board followed Virginia law and State Board of Elections guidance in how we handled the November 2013 General Election. " Schoeneman, a Republican, said he was concerned that Judd's comments were suggesting the "false perception" that the handling of provisional ballots altered the statewide race, "which is simply untrue." Before the state's certification, Herring and Obenshain each named transition teams to succeed Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who fell short in his Republican bid for governor. Their positions were unchanged Monday. "I am gratified that the State Board of Elections today certified me as the winner of a close but fair election," Herring said in a statement.

San Diego Mayoral Race Set For Runoff As A Democrat Steps Aside

L.A. Zoo celebrates its first birth of okapi, a Alvarez, whose platform most resembles Filner's, was elected to the city council in 2010 by largely working-class and Hispanic neighborhoods, including Barrio Logan, where he grew up. He has established a track record of fighting for those communities, often finding himself at odds with downtown interests. Support from San Diego's Latino neighborhoods, long ignored by the city's mainstream politicians, was seen as key in elevating Filner, a progressive Democrat who served 20 years in congress, to the office of mayor last year. Now Alvarez has a clear shot at becoming San Diego's first Hispanic elected mayor - at least since California statehood - in a city originally founded as a presidio, or military post, by the Spanish five decades before Mexican independence. "It's taken 167 years since California's independence from Mexico to get back to the real possibility of a Latino chief executive in San Diego," said political science professor Carl Luna of San Diego Mesa College. Filner's victory was regarded as a political turning point for a city that has typically leaned conservative, in part because of its large military and retired military presence. Faulconer "represents the center right, which is the tradition of mayors that we've had in the past," San Diego Republican Party Chairman Tony Kravic said in September. To win election, Alvarez will "have to overcome substantial downtown establishment Republican support and funding," said professor Steven Erie of the University of California at San Diego.

Schofield had entered Mila's enclosure to give her some fruit, but tripped on the way out. A coroner's investigation later branded the death as the result of an accident, not an attack. A witness told reporters that Mila seemed to be trying to protect, not harm, Schofield. After Schofield's death, trustees at the Franklin Zoo decided to close the facility and disperse its animals. Mila was a problem given her size, notoriety and the rarity of elephants in the zoos of New Zealand and Australia. With regional options unavailable, and euthanasia being discussed, a deal was struck to airlift Mila from Auckland to Los Angeles, then drive her to the San Diego Zoo. Amid a cloak of secrecy, the truck carrying Mila arrived Nov. 14. Under standard orders from the U.S.

But Christopher Crotty, also an unaligned political consultant, sees Alvarez as "a solid, progressive council member who fights doggedly for his district and delivers. He sees himself as David and those who have controlled City Hall for decades to the detriment of neighborhoods like Barrio Logan as Goliaths." With all 581 precincts counted, Faulconer had 43.6% of the vote; Alvarez, 25.6%; Fletcher, 24.3%; and former City Atty. Mike Aquirre, 4.4%. The remaining votes were split among seven minor candidates. Some 34,500 provisional ballots remain to be counted, but Fletcher is given little chance to overcome Alvarez's 2,638-vote lead. Faulconer would have needed 50% plus one vote to avoid a runoff. On Wednesday, Fletcher conceded defeat and endorsed Alvarez. The voter turnout was 35%, well below the 50% initially predicted by the county registrar of voters. Fletcher, 36, was making his second run for mayor. The ex-husband couldn't reached for comment by CNN. David Amaya was the only child his parents had together, and for now, he is withholding judgment on which parent's account to believe. While Kathy Amaya doesn't maintain contact with her ex-husband, David Amaya has been in touch with his father. The son will make up his mind on his parents' conflicting stories when he's able to talk with them side-by-side, he said. In the meantime, he's enjoying his stay in San Diego so much that he's planning on making his home there -- after reuniting with his mother in San Diego and then returning with her and her fiance to Wisconsin for a visit there, he said. A drummer who played with a band in Mexico, David Amaya said he likes San Diego's proximity to Mexico and its cultural atmosphere. Moreover, he's taken a liking to a local church pastor, Freddy Rivas, who has helped Amaya with food and shelter since the Border Patrol released him. Amaya was recently baptized at the church. "We fed him. We give him a warm bath. He hadn't taken a shower in 10 days.

San Diego city attorney maneuvered to force Filner from office For tenants of rental units, there'll be pass-through water-rate increases from their landlords. Officials say it's unavoidable because the city refused to pass on to its customers the last set of rate hikes from the region's supplier the Los Angeles-based Metropolitan Water District whose charges are the subject of a billion-dollar-plus lawsuit. Without payments this time around, there may be credit downgrades that raise San Diego's cost of borrowing. Facing that civic reality, homeowners are adjusting their realities. "One of the changes I'm going to have to look at is, do I let my landscape guy go? What am I doing to do here? Do I put in AstroTurf? What do I do?" asked Dennis Rogers of Sorrento Valley. The city expects a decision next month in the Metropolitan Water District case.

Manager Can't Take On Role Of Liaison Between Board And Attorney

In Bell trial, Angela Spaccia's attorney wraps up by blaming others

The party's central committee has scheduled a Dec. 14 meeting to make the choice. Within a week after Swallow took the oath of office in January, he was accused of engaging in questionable financial dealings with a businessman facing federal fraud charges. The allegations triggered a series of investigations and calls for his resignation Swallow's resignation is the first time a Utah attorney general has stepped down midterm, said Tim Chambless of the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics. The state has seen two governors resign, but both left for other political posts and not in scandal, he said. "Under these circumstances, this is unprecedented in Utah political history," Chambless said. Swallow has been accused of arranging a bribery plot and trading offers of protection in return for favors from several businessmen. He is also accused of failing to disclose business interests on campaign forms and violating attorney-client privilege while serving in the attorney general's office. He has been or is currently being investigated by the state elections office, two county attorneys, the Utah House, the FBI, the Department of Justice and the Utah State Bar. Swallow has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. At his nearly half-hour news conference Thursday, Swallow repeatedly accused the Utah House of launching a politically driven investigation and cited his concerns about the amount of public money they were spending. "I believe the investigation was calculated to make it very difficult for me to stay in office," he said.

VIDEO: Young Fan Challenges NBA Usher to Dance-Off Also Can condo owner insist on having an electric vehicle charging station? Answer: The quick answer is yes, but not exactly. The basic rule is that when an attorney represents the board, the fiduciary duty is owed toward every board director, and the board as a whole has the ultimate say on all issues. But the board is a group, and whenever a lawyer represents a group of people any group (the board being just one example) the attorney has the right to ask that all communications go through designated directors. Otherwise, the lawyer could be receiving continual and conflicting communications. Boards should be mindful of the possibility of manager interference with board duties.

Gov't appoints Shai Nitzan as new state attorney

Part of this response has been my support for the state setting the standards that would allow migrants to not only come to Australia, but to become part of this place and to flourish here as in so many migrant success stories. This is what the vilification provisions of the Race Discrimination Act are about - making a statement on the behaviour we expect of all citizens and making sure that visible minorities can defend themselves, not with fists but with the law. I have made standing up for people a key part of my life and I must admit that I have been critical of racial vilification provisions of the act (18C), not because they limited freedom of speech, but because the exemptions contained in the same part of the act (18D) are so broad that you could drive the proverbial truck through them. These exemptions cover artistic, academic and scientific work and public interest publications which are all allowable if they are done in ''good faith''. So why are so many people not aware of the exemptions? Why has the bulk of the debate been framed around one person, Andrew Bolt, to the point that the provisions are erroneously referred to as the ''Bolt laws''? We need to understand both the protections and exemptions relevant to this part of the act. It is only in having the full picture that we understand the ramifications of any watering down of the vilification provisions? I could be cynical and suggest that the reason is that the exemptions side of the argument has not suited our governments over the past 20 years. By not communicating the exemptions in section 18D we now have responses to 18C (the vilification provisions) which are based on ignorance and literally only half the story. I am also worried that any change will come at a time when the incidence of racist behaviour is increasing.

Attorney-General George Brandis' review of racial vilification laws a blow for protection

"I've said what terrible things he did to the city, but even evil people can produce good things. You've all heard of Adolf Hitler and Volkswagen," he said, referring to the car developed by Nazi Germany. Braun said that after Rizzo remarried in early 2007, "all of a sudden he wanted more and more immediate money, and my client gets the benefit of his greed." Braun told jurors that then-Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley charged Spaccia and seven other Bell officials because he was running for attorney general, a race he lost. Spaccia's lawyer mentioned that the Bell defendants were arrested and their photos shown at a news conference with Cooley, where Cooley characterized what happened in the city as "corruption on steroids." "It should not be part of a publicity stunt," Braun said, "and that's really the genesis of this case." Five former Bell council members were found guilty of corruption earlier this year. One of them, Teresa Jacobo, testified for Spaccia. Braun spent several minutes defending Jacobo, who had been called a "convicted felon" during the prosecutor's closing argument. "She was there 10 years," Braun said. "She didn't see anything criminal going on. She was a victim." As he has throughout the trial, Braun said the real conspiracy was between Rizzo and Lourdes Garcia, who had been Bell's director of administrative services and who testified under a grant of immunity. He called Garcia "a perjurer" and said that when Rizzo needed someone to falsify a document, he went to Garcia, not Spaccia.

She added that those on the Right did not want a process with more candidates, but a candidate who would turn a blind eye to illegal actions from their end of the spectrum. Traditionally the five-member appointments committee interviews multiple candidates (which it did for this position), and the justice minister does not do a further round of interviews. Livni added that Nitzan would make decisions without taking orders from politicians. She also said the new state attorney would defend the rule of law and also [the states] security as was proven in past cases when he needed to defend security-related decisions. All three Bayit Yehudi ministers: Bennett, Uri Ariel and Uri Urbach, voted against Nitzan, as did Uzi Landau of Likud Beytenu. With regard to Y.R., Mr. Bergers lack of interest is, if anything, even more shameful, considering that, in October 2011, he reported interviewing Y.R., and being told about a tape recording of a conversation arranged by the police with Lebovits, which, Mr. Berger reported, contained the following exchange: I told him, What should I do because the NYPD are questioning me about whats happened, Y.R. said. San Diego Police Officers Who Rescued Man Trapped In Submerged Vehicle Hailed As Heroes

San Diego State Aztecs vs. Boise State Broncos: Game Preview

"As the water was rising in the vehicle, that's when I knew something had to be done," said Perkins. "That's when I went around and met with Officer Ward and we decided that we had to go in after him." The two took off their gun belts and waded into the icy, filthy water. Ward used his non-police issued tool to break the side passenger window, allowing both officers to pull the 20-year-old man out. Ward and Perkins are being called heroes, but they claim it was all in a day's work. Ward was on overtime when he responded and Perkins responded because of his familiarity with the underpass. "I don't consider myself a hero; I'm just doing my job," Perkins said. Ward added, "Anybody else would do the same thing." Neither officer has ever been involved in anything like what they experienced Thursday night. Both were checked out by medical personnel because the water was cold and dirty. Perkins said he received a tetanus booster shot as a precaution. The road that flooded is a spot known well by both police and San Diego's Storm Water crews. Because it sits at sea level, it often gets wet during high tides, add to that a storm with heavy rainfall, and debris running downhill, and you've got flooding.

Hedrick was 27 of 36 for 265 yards through the air in a game that racked up about an equal number of yards both passing and running. His main targets were WR Shane Williams-Rhodes, 5-6, 158 lbs, and WR Matt Miller, 6-3, 218 lbs. Miller grabbed 7 passes for 143 yards and 3 TDs. Boise State's offense is ranked 18th nationally in total offense, and balanced fairly well between both passing and running. Expect the Broncos to roll with a quick-strike strategy employing both passing and rushing. But they will first test the San Diego defense early against the run. RB Jay Ajayi, 6-0, 215 lbs, has put up 1,078 yards on 182 carries and 15 TDs this season, and Boise States rushing offense is ranked 24th nationally averaging 4.78 yards a carry and 215.5 yards per game. If they could control the ground game it would be huge as San Diego is third in the conference in total time of possession.

San Diego State Stifles San Diego Christian College

By establishing a 21-0 lead, the Aztecs took away what little hope San Diego Christian had coming into this contest. The Aztecs forced eight turnovers and 10 missed shots from the Hawks before San Diego Christian hit their first field goal with 10:35 remaining in the opening half. In postgame remarks, San Diego Christian head coach Tim Cook had this to say about the Aztecs on defense: "San Diego State is the best defensive team that I have been on the court coaching or playing against. The length, the gap closes, the pinch downs are incredibly difficult to score against. It's an unbelievable defensive team." To their credit, the Aztecs played well on offense too. They made their first five field goal attempts. J.J. O'Brien scored 9 out of the first 11 points for the Aztecs and chipped in an assist on Winston Shepard's layup. O'Brien played just 21 minutes but led the team with 16 points. He also added six rebounds and two assists. He was 7-for-9 shooting from the field and made both of his three point shot attempts.

San Diego: Latinos Help Carry Alvarez to Runoff

The 46-year-old former public relations executive must appeal beyond his Republican base to prevail in a runoff. Democrats hold a 13-point advantage over Republicans in voter registration. "I'm a Republican in a majority Democrat district," Faulconer said. "I'm used to getting things done by working together with people." Latinos are a key demographic, accounting for 28.8 percent of the city's 1.3 million residents, many of them living in hardscrabble neighborhoods south of downtown that Alvarez represents. They made up 15.5 percent of the voters in November 2012 elections, according to Michael Vu, San Diego County registrar. Alvarez was the only one of six children in his family born in the U.S. His father came to the U.S. on the "bracero" program under which Mexican farm laborers harvested crops temporarily and later became a janitor. His mother was a fast-food worker. "Latinos have started to come into their own in the last decade as far as a political force. Certainly David was a beneficiary of that," said John Nienstedt, who worked as a pollster on the Faulconer campaign.

Seth Mallios, a Kennedy expert who is chairman of SDSU's Anthropology Department said JFK's death took place about five months after he visited our city during a trip where he made extremely important speeches on peace, the legacy of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, and education rights. "The summer of 1963 was the apex of his presidency," Mallios said. The education speech came at San Diego State's commencement ceremony that June. He was in the midst of forcing the University of Alabama to integrate and the South wasn't a welcoming place, according to the professor. "He was able to address civil rights in a very safe spot in the West," Mallios said. Mallios said the speech sparked a transformation that turned San Diego State from a college to a university. The president was actually late to the commencement address because he wanted to meet people, according to according to the Kennedy historian. The Kennedy expert added that photos and film of Kennedy's visit to San Diego, where an estimated 250,000 lined the streets to catch a glimpse of him, are shocking by today's standards, with random people shaking his hand and even grabbing his face.

Lawyer: Officer Who Leaked To Dealer Thought He Was Informant

Did Phila. lawyer talk to Castro about JFK death?

Sinson represented Robert Talamine, the owner of an apartment rental business who was arrested after two cars at a competing business had their tires slashed. Prosecutors dismissed charges when a witness who said he'd seen a man slash the tires on one car and leave in a vehicle with a license plate number that police tracked to Talamine failed to appear in court. Talamine sued for defamation and malicious prosecution, but the case was dismissed by then-Cook County Judge William Taylor, who in 2012 was appointed to the Illinois Appellate Court's First District. When a panel of First District judges not including Taylor upheld the lawsuit's dismissal in July, Sinson "exploded," he later acknowledged. He wrote in a filing that the appellate decision "troubled" him, saying it left out "facts it finds inconvenient." "Perhaps this Court felt it was more important to maintain a friendly relationship with their colleague down the hallway than it was to do justice," he wrote But after the court threatened to hold Sinson in contempt, he apologized. The court accepted and decided against sanctioning him. "While this insulting language may impress his client in a manner more suited for talk radio, it has absolutely no place in a judicial setting as it does nothing to serve the interest of justice and it promotes disrespect for the independence and impartiality of the judiciary," the court wrote. Sinson's attorney, George Collins, said his client's emotions got the better of him and he "blew up" after losing what he thought was a strong case. "Umpires call strikes and balls, and if you don't like that rule, then you shouldn't play baseball," Collins said.

Rafael Cordero, 52, had no idea his sibling had instead worked his way to the top echelons of one of Kensington's largest drug trafficking organizations, attorney Jack McMahon Jr. said. "This is not a bad cop. This is not a rogue," the lawyer told jurors as Cordero's trial on federal obstruction of justice charges began Thursday. "This is a cop that always made good choices, sound choices." FBI agents arrested Cordero in August 2012, more than a year after authorities first discovered his family bond with David Garcia, a top operator in a heroin distribution ring run by Christian "Wassa" Serrano and Edwin "June" Medina. Both men were arrested in 2011. Serrano awaits a February trial. Medina pleaded guilty Monday to 16 drug trafficking counts. But it was during the investigation that brought them down that Cordero showed his true loyalties, prosecutors said Thursday. Two years ago, agents with the U.S.

Alioto of San Francisco says the merger would reduce competition and boost fares. He sued the airlines in August. Alioto's claims are similar to those raised by the U.S. Justice Department. The government, however, settled its lawsuit against the merger last week after the airlines agreed to give some of their operating rights at major airports to low-fare competitors. In a filing Thursday, Alioto asked a federal bankruptcy judge in New York to delay the merger, which would create the world's biggest airline. American Airlines parent AMR Corp. plans to exit bankruptcy protection and complete the merger in the next few weeks.

On Wednesday night, ESPN.com reported that a DNA analysis completed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed that DNA provided by Winston matched the sample taken from the underwear of the woman. According to the DNA analysis report, a copy of which was viewed by ESPN.com on Wednesday, the Florida state crime lab determined the chance of the DNA in the woman's underwear being a match for someone other than Winston was one in 2.2 trillion. On Thursday morning, Tim Jansen, Winston's attorney, said Winston had sex with the woman on Dec. 7, 2012, and that the sex was "absolutely" consensual. Jansen said the DNA match didn't surprise him and that the revelation wouldn't change his client's defense to the allegations. Lawyer O'Mara: Trayvon Martin Shooting Traumatized George Zimmerman

We are completely shocked by the contents of the story because your reporter based his story on evidence given in camera in the Courtroom in a robbery case in which our client is 5th Accused. The High Court presided over by Mr. Justice Logoh is hearing proceedings involving PW3 named by your reporter as Obiri Yeboah in camera, and only defence Counsel, Court officials and the accused are in the Courtroom. We cannot understand how your reporters hands fell on the evidence, and we are more concerned because we are not allowed by law to disclose the cross examination we made and its impact on the concoctions of the witness. Suffice it to say that our client Frank Amegadzi is in custody on an alleged robbery case, but even notwithstanding the inventions of Yeboah, the Police have not thought it necessary to even take a Statement be it cautioned, investigative or ordinary from Frank Amegadzi all this while. In short, Frank Amegadzi has NOT been grabbed for killing any lawyer. Our client who has a fairly prosperous businesswoman for a wife, will definitely not kill his family friend of a lawyer, if at all, not for a paltry sum of 3,000 Gh Cedis assuming this imaginative motive were to be true. We are not lawyers nor spokesmen for the Ghana Police Service, but we have no doubt in our minds that if and when they eventually capture the killers of our late learned friend Blay, they will certainly put the culprits before Court for full trial.

San Diego mayoral runoff to pit Kevin Faulconer against David Alvarez

San Diego city attorney maneuvered to force Filner from office Victoria Hyatt says her husband was attacked in such a way by a stranger in downtown San Diego on Tuesday. As her husband waited to cross the intersection at 2nd Avenue and Ash Street, Hyatt says a man walked up beside her husband and then, out of nowhere, punched her husband in the face. And as soon as he hit him as hard as he could, he just kept walking, Hyatt told NBC 7 San Diego. It was like nothing had happened. Hyatt says her husband was in complete shock and never saw the attack coming. [The man] was dressed like any other young man downtown. He had a nice dress shirt on, a nice pair of slacks, she said. When Hyatt learned the assault on her husband may be tied to the fast-spreading knockout game, she couldnt believe it. I had never heard of this before, she said, adding that something like this could happen to anyone. It appears to be a relatively new trend, said San Diego Police Department Officer Jim Johnson.

Tourism is San Diego's second largest traded industry, which means visitors to our city spend money, create jobs and drive much of the revenue we depend upon as a community. In some ways, the firm, which specializes in civil and criminal litigation and internal investigations, is a big change from Martins days in big law at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, Howrey and Dorsey & Whitney. The office houses four lawyers compared to Howreys 1,000, and is down the hall from a think tank and the U.N.s world food program offices, inside a K Street building whose ground floor is Bobby Flays burger joint. But Martins brand has stayed the same minus the overhead of expensive big law real estate, and the accompanying hourly rates. Martin was a high-ranking partner at Howrey at the time the Washington law firms partners voted to dissolve in 2011 . He joined Dorsey & Whitney for less than a year before founding Martin & Gitner.

San Diego Chargers? Loss Overshadows Great Game By Ryan Mathews

Scandal-weary San Diego to elect a mayor

Since returning from a concussion that knocked him out against the Oakland Raiders in Week 5, Mathews appears to have his head on straight, averaging 5.2 yards per carry and delivering three 100-yard rushing games in the last five. More importantly though is that he has only fumbled once the entire season, all the way back in Week 2, and hasnt missed a game to injury all year. Mathews will need to remain on the top of his game to help control the clock and keep opposing offenses (and San Diegos horrific defense) off the field. Though still playing well, Philip Rivers numbers arent as gaudy as they were in the beginning of the season, and still should benefit with a strong running game to support his aerial attack. If the Chargers could only figure out how to convert in the redzone, the Chargers offense could be nearly unstoppable with the ground game and passing game being equally dominant between the 20s. Mathews performance may not have resulted in a win on Sunday, but is a start that could benefit the Bolts through the final six games if he can keep it up. No. 6 Arizona sets sights on San Diego State

Each has the endorsement of a collection of party notables and labor unions. Fletcher finished third in last year's mayoral primary behind Filner and DeMaio. At the time, he was an independent, having dumped the Republican Party. Now he's a Democrat. "As we go through life, we change positions," Fletcher said during the roundtable, attempting to explain his party shifting. Faulconer, 46, in his second term representing a beach district, was a close ally of former Mayor Jerry Sanders . Support from Sanders and the editorial page of the U-T San Diego newspaper is key to his campaign. Fletcher, 36, who served in Iraq as an enlisted Marine, is now an executive at Qualcomm , whose co-founder, Irwin Jacobs, is a major supporter.

San Diego GOP power brokers map out comeback after Filner debacle Bill McCarroll photographed Old Town San Diego on Thursday. The woman in the period costume caught his eye. "The brimmed hat definitely emphasizes the vintage feeling in the image," he said. McCarroll used aLeica MP film camera. Each week, we're featuring photos of Southern California submitted by readers.

Ryan Mathews San Diego Chargers Left tackle Bryant McKinnie had trouble identifying and picking up such blitzes in his first game with the Dolphins, against the New England Patriots. Once again he blocked down, leaving nobody to pick up the blitzer who plowed into Tannehill. Tannehill faced long odds on the ensuing 3rd-and-12, and chose to check down to tailback Daniel Thomas for a minimal gain. 5:05 PM ET Sun, Nov 17 The game has settled into a holding pattern for the time being as the San Diego Chargers offense stalls out, punting to the Dolphins. The Dolphins continue to hit the Chargers' porous pass defense with their passing attack led by quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who hit tight end Charles Clay on a roll-out pass for a first down. Miami is still deep in its own territory. 4:51 PM ET Sun, Nov 17 The Dolphins punched the football into the end zone for a go-ahead score thanks to a combination of impressive passing, running, and a little bit of luck. Tannehill has been crisp in his passes, aside from an underthrow on a deep ball intended for receiver Mike Wallace. Tailback Daniel Thomas has done a good job claiming yards after contact on run plays up the middle. Wide receiver Brian Hartline continued a string of mistakes by catching a football and fumbling it near the goal line. However, he was bailed out by a costly roughing the passer penalty called against the San Diego Chargers.

San Diego Chargers vs. Miami Dolphins: Live Score, Highlights and Analysis

There are no comments yet. Get the conversation started by leaving the first comment Filner, the city's first Democratic leader in 20 years, resigned less than nine months into a four-year term after nearly 20 women - including a retired Navy rear admiral and a San Diego State University dean - publicly identified themselves as targets of his unwanted advances, including kissing, groping and requests for dates. He pleaded guilty last month to one felony count of false imprisonment and two misdemeanor counts of battery for his behavior toward women during his brief time in office. Kevin Faulconer, a two-term city councilman, is the lone high-profile Republican in Tuesday's election, facing several prominent Democrats. If no one wins a majority - a likely scenario with 11 names on the ballot - the top two finishers advance to a runoff. Faulconer, 46, is widely considered a shoo-in for a runoff against David Alvarez, a first-term city councilman, or Nathan Fletcher, an executive at wireless technology titan Qualcomm Inc. and former state assemblyman who finished third in last year's race. Filner, a former 10-term congressman, has barely been mentioned in campaign mailers or televised debates.

Replacing Filner: With Election, San Diego Looks To Move Past Scandal

With Election, San Diego Looks To Move Past Scandal One leading candidate shifted political parties twice in less than two years. Filner has been largely absent during the 12-week scramble since his resignation, but he still looms large over the election. I think that everyone wants to be the anti-Filner, said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles who specializes in ethics and governmental reform. You show that every aspect of your life is open and that you dont perform sexual assaults. At a glance, the field looks like a group of anti-Filners. The three leading candidates, who range in ages from 33 to 46, have all served just two terms or less in state or local office. Filner, 71, ran on a three-decade career in elected office, which included 20 years in Congress. Candidates have called for increased transparency and integrity at city hall, and local media has delved deep into candidates' backgrounds. The most intense jockeying ahead of the election has involved Republican Kevin Faulconer, a two-term councilman, and three leading Democrats -- Councilman David Alvarez, former City Attorney Mike Aguirre former legislator and mayoral hopeful Nathan Fletcher. Faulconer, whose past portfolio of public relations clients has been the subject of scrutiny, issued a Transparency First plan as the election entered its final stretch, while Alvarez endorsed a proposal to amend the city's charter on public records access as a "foundation of my blueprint and vision for the future of San Diego." Both trumpeted transparency in releasing their college transcripts, which revealed that Faulconer got an A in Advanced Surfing and Alvarez received a B-minus in "Marching Band," according to local reports. Fletcher even refuted a local newspapers assertion that he had a blemish-free driving record by admitting to receiving a traffic ticket in 2010. His critics have still asked whether he can be trusted, pointing to the fact that he changed political parties twice in two years and his oft-repeated but false claim that he was the first in his family to go to college. We want to have a known quantity of our next mayor.

San Diego needs more ?Hollywood?

Arizona leads the all-time series by a 21-7 margin. Even though he has not put up incredible numbers so far, Aaron Gordon, the blue chip prize of Sean Miller's recruiting class, has largely lived up to the hype in his first two games as a Wildcat. Gordon (13.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.5 bpg) is averaging a double-double in two games and is also blocking nearly three shots per game. In the win over Long Beach State, Gordon finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. T.J. McConnell, another new addition, who was brought in to play the point, is also performing well. McConnell clearly knows his role as he isn't scoring much, but with 14 assists in two games, he is more than capable of distributing to the Wildcats' scorers.

Highlights from Southern California Moments The scientific society called the auction a "loss to the public trust" and "destructive to our science." Padian's objections were even more vehement. The proposed commercial sale, he said in an e-mail, would set a "horrendous" precedent. It was "absolutely unthinkable," "unconscionable" and a "barbarity," he said. Informed of the San Diego museum's reversal, Padian called the cancellation "good news." The fossils included several that had been discovered more than a century ago by Charles M. Sternberg , a famed Canadian collector. They were historically of high importance, Padian said. There was no word Monday whether officials at the San Diego museum would take up offers by the Berkeley museum and several others to take over the fossils. The museum, the officials said, will now be "re-evaluating how to proceed." Scientists at universities and paleontology museums have long made an issue of the commercial sale san diego lawyers of important fossils to private collectors because such sales often take the fossils from public view or make them inaccessible to scientists researching life in the distant past - especially for studies of ancient evolution. The Mercy was ordered last week to be prepared for deployment and will await further orders. The U.S. military and numerous private organizations have been assisting since Typoon Haiyan struck Nov. 8, causing widespread devastation in the central islands of Leyte and Samar. The official death toll is around 4,000. Meanwhile, the San Diego-based littoral combat ship USS Freedom stocked up on relief supplies in Brunei today and will head to the disaster site, part of the effort known as Operation Damayan. Damayan meaning helping each other or mutual intagalog. The Freedom had been patrolling waters around Southeast Asia since deploying from San Diego in March. Its truly a pleasure to visit Brunei and have an opportunity to catch a glimpse of this beautiful country and experience its warm hospitality, said Freedoms commanding officer, Cmdr. Pat Thien. While I know the crew would appreciate more time ashore to explore the area, and to work with our (Royal Brunei Navy) partners, were looking forward to getting under way to support Operation Damayan and potentially train together at sea on the way to the Philippines. The vessel is scheduled to sail home to San Diego after the relief mission, according to the Navy.

philippines The demise of the San Diego Film Commission last summer due to a cut in tourism funding was bad enough. More than 40 other California cities, most of them much smaller than San Diego, have film commissions whose job it is to lure production companies to their towns, creating jobs and boosting the local economy. But San Diego still had an advantage over its neighbor to the north, according to former film commission chief Rob Dunson: no permit fees, which over the years made San Diego something of a hotbed for TV shows from Simon and Simon to Veronica Mars and, most recently, Terriers, a short-lived crime series shot in Ocean Beach in 2010. That was part of our lure, Dunson said. Production companies like to be as close to Los Angeles as they can get, for the talent pool. But now that L.A. is [waiving permit fees], why leave L.A. to come here? He said local film production has dried up to virtually nothing, ever since filming on Anchor Man 2 ended in the summer. I still get calls from production people, but I really dont have anywhere to point them, he said. Lets just hope someone eventually decides this is a viable industry. Not only does San Diego no longer have a film commission, but all of California is seeing a profound erosion of production, according to the industry magazine Variety, prompting a call by the state film commission to increase tax credits. A state commission report also found that Californias share of production of one-hour network series, which are not eligible for the tax credit, had shrunk to just 37 percent in 2012 from 89 percent in 2005.

San Diego St. gets 28-21 overtime win over Hawaii

The Rainbow Warriors (0-10, 0-7) had a chance to win it on the final play of the fourth quarter, but Taylor Graham's deep ball fell incomplete and the teams went into overtime. San Diego State started the extra period on offense and needed just three plays - all runs by Muema - to score. Hawaii gave up a second-down sack on its ensuing drive, followed by a pair of incomplete passes to end the game. Muema carried 24 times and averaged 6.8 yards per rush. The Aztecs rushed for 234 yards, and quarterback Quinn Kahler completed 17 of 34 pass attempts for 265 yards with a touchdown to Colin Lockett, who finished with four grabs for 106 yards. Josh Gavert led the defensive effort with 11 tackles and one interception. Late in the first quarter, Hawaii capitalized off a San Diego State special teams' miscue. Scott Harding's rugby-style, end-over-end punt hit the Aztecs' David Lamar downfield and was recovered by the Rainbow Warriors' Jerrol Garcia-Williams at the SDSU 23-yard line. Two plays later, Iosefa found the end zone from five yards out to score the game's first points.

No, San Diego Wouldn?t Have Lost Soitec to the Higher Affordable Housing Fee

There were very good reasons to go to Oceanside. It was a teeny bit better in Oceanside. They made the decision to go to Rancho Bernardo because of all the city had done to welcome them, Waring said. But it was close. If they had been assessed another $400,000 or $500,000 extra, all things being equal, they would have gone to Oceanside, he said. Oceanside, like all cities in San Diego County other than San Diego, does not charge an affordable housing fee on commercial and industrial developments. When I checked with Soitec, however, I was surprised to hear a representative say Waring was just flat wrong. In the context of a $200 million investment, it wasnt an issue then. Would it have been a determining factor? Probably not because of such a strong allegiance Soitec had to San Diego, said Karen Hutchens, a local public relations professional who represents the company. I clarified to be sure.

Lawyer V. Lawyer As Mostyn Squares Off Against Texas Trial Lawyers Association

2013_10_jetsfanpunch.jpg Chief executive Peter Lawwell said: "This lawyer will be tasked with looking at each serious complaint more closely on behalf of our supporters. "Events in Holland need to be looked at in real detail." Lawwell insists Celtic are treating the issue with "real seriousness". "As we have said already, Celtic Football Club does not condone any form of violent or offensive behaviour and clearly, should it be found that anyone connected to the club has indulged in such behaviour, then absolutely, as a responsible football club, we will take the appropriate action," he told Celtic's annual meeting. It became clear that a number of arrests had been made but also became clear that there was considerable comment regarding the negative treatment of our supporters Celtic statement "We have received numerous complaints from supporters concerning their treatment in Amsterdam and it is our duty to investigate these further. "Celtic and our supporters have a tremendous reputation. It is one we hold dear and one which we want to preserve. "Celtic has been pro-active, serious and sincere in relation to this matter and we will continue to be so." Dutch police made 44 arrests and, of the 28 Celtic supporters held, 22 were freed - 10 without charge and 12 after paying fines. Police claimed that eight officers were hurt after being attacked with bottles and sticks by Celtic fans. But, in a fresh club statement, Celtic said: "Prior to the match against Ajax, Celtic Football Club put into action the normal rigorous matchday planning protocol, which involved visiting Holland in advance, liaising with all relevant authorities, including both the Scottish and Dutch police forces, Uefa, AFC Ajax and the British consul. "As part of the visit to Amsterdam for this match, we took six police officers from Police Scotland, along with 13 travel stewards to accompany our supporters. "All relevant safety and security information was relayed to supporters in advance, including particular areas of the city which were identified as unsafe by local police. "Following an incident in the city centre on the Tuesday evening where Celtic supporters were attacked, the club repeated its warning for supporters to be vigilant.

BART fatality: 16-year-old crushed by BART train, possible suicide tragedy An urgent meeting called recently by the TTLA was to address complaints about its spending practices and other criticism leveled by a breakaway faction of attorneys who say they want more for their money , The Texas Tribune reported. Mostyn told the Tribune he started the new group because he felt like the TTLAs dues were being wasted on lavish salaries and benefits instead of getting allies elected to important state elected offices. In an earlier article discussing the organizations formation , the Tribune described the effort as a new group of like-minded attorneys who want to shake up politics and the storied Texas Trial Lawyers Association along with it. The groups chief goal, Mostyn said, was getting more money into the hands of candidates friendly to their cause, with as little administrative bloat as possible. Both raising money to help elect allies to state offices and forming organizations to that end are hardly new ventures for Mostyn. Hes already committed to raising money for Battleground Texas . A recent article noted Battleground Texas purported goals of registering new voters and mobilizing voters already registered but not currently participating in our election process. Previously uninvolved citizens helping to put trial lawyer friendly candidates into office is understandably a win for legal practitioners like Mostyn, as a Democratic mega-donor as well as a personal injury lawyer specializing in hurricane lawsuits. Such a ploy, the article suggested, can appear as political activism perhaps masking for professional opportunism. As good lawyers comfortably argue any side of a case, the Texas Association of Consumer Lawyers formation appears Mostyn flipping the equation and creatively channeling professional opportunism into political activism. Many of todays civil actions especially the type in which Mostyn seemingly specializes are about legal gamesmanship strategically launched against targeted business entities or identifiable classes of industrial and/or economic interests. Its not about a meritorious case, its about who has the resources, the cast of court-related personnel and best control of the playing field. In always working to ensure such means, a lawyers association seeking to shake up politics by electing candidates friendly to their cause would seem a shrewd move. After donating $3 million to a pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA , in 2012, Mostyn and his wife Amber are also now founding members of Ready for Hillary . Mostyns past activities include joining in the 2010 Texas governors race by targeting Gov.

Evidence is termed exculpatory when it favors a suspect and tends to clear him or her of guilt. Winston, a redshirt freshman who has dazzled the college football world with his play this fall, is being investigated in an attack on a woman reported to Tallahassee, Fla., police last Dec. 7 . He has not been arrested nor charged with any crime, and Florida State officials have said his status for the No. 2 Seminoles game against Syracuse has not changed. Jansen has said he first learned of the case and Winstons status as a possible suspect last February. But he said that at that time he was told the case had been closed. Then, on Wednesday, he was told it had been reopened. FOX Sports has learned that Winston was not identified as a possible suspect in the assault until after the spring semester began in January. According to a heavily redacted copy of the police report, which does not identify Winston, the victim alleged a sexual assault using force between 1:30 and 2 on that Friday morning. Police officers responded to an apartment, where the victim described the attacker as standing between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11 and weighing 240 pounds.

Lawyer: Witness info will clear Jameis Winston of sex assault

The bouncer, George Pule, allegedly approached the victim and told her that he could get her into the busy nightclub where her friends were partying. As he lead her towards the club entrance, he veered off and ended up taking her down a nearby alley and raping her. The lawyer alleged in court that the victim of the rape did not struggle nor shout out at the time of the incident . The lawyer said to the court: All she would have had to do was to close her legs? its as simple as that. Why didnt she do that? The reason she didnt do that was because the sex was consensual, as easy as that. Jefferies comments have caused outrage in some circles. Natalie Gousmett from the Wellington Rape Crisis Center said the comments were a horrific attempt to shift the blame fro the rape onto the victim. She also referred to the famous Roadbuster case in Auckland, which saw a group of youths bragging online about having group sex with minors. It is an example of victim-blaming comments and rape culture, which weve seen all too much in the last week and a half. Its very offensive obviously, and harmful for the victim and her family , she said. Jefferies, meanwhile, defended his comments, saying that they shouldnt be taken out of context: If there had been anything unduly wrong with what I said I wouldve been reprimanded by the judge and also the crown lawyer would have complained.

-- People fighting a drug rehab are laughing and shaking their heads watching an exclusive CBS 12 interview. It's all about controversial letters sent to Juno Beach residents telling them that lawyers are coming after their personal emails, phone records, and computers. The lawyer who sent the letters is breaking his silence about what some neighbors are calling scare tactics. At first James Green, the attorney for the drug rehab, didn't want to comment about these letters. Now he's defending the letters that go way too far according to some families here in Juno Beach. "I'm protecting my children, if they don't like it bring it," said resident Lori Ramirez. Lori is raising two energetic boys. Finishing homework and dinner are the battles any mother expects to fight. But ever since the drug rehab moved in right across the street, Lori says protecting her family's future is getting complicated. She said, "They want it right in front of my children and everybody's families." The battle to legally operate a drug rehab on Venus Drive hasn't been easy for Recovery Resources. Families opposing the rehab recently scored a big win when the town council voted down a plan that would have kept the rehab in the neighborhood for another 10 years. The letters came next, telling the families to save private emails, call records and more because the lawyer for the drug rehab plans on coming after all of it. The attorney for the drug rehab James Green says he's serious about that threat. "I might not be able to get them for another six, twelve, eighteen months, but I'll get them," said Green. He's accusing the neighbors and town officials of discriminating against disabled people, he says that includes people going through rehab. Green said, "It's not a tactic, I'm going to get the evidence, I've got a right to the evidence and they can't go around destroying evidence." "Destroy what evidence?" asked Lori, "That's ridiculous, what does he think we're doing? We shared Green's interview with Lori Thursday night, and she says the letter didn't scare her and this doesn't either. "I have nothing to hide, none of us have anything to hide," said Lori.

The Lawyer Representing the 9/11 Defendant Who Killed My Friend

He won an acquittal in the Ruby Ridge case of 1993, in which his client was accused of murdering a deputy U.S. marshal during a North Idaho standoff. In other cases, Nevin has defended neo-Nazis and a mother who helped her 14-year-old son buy a handgun he used to kill a policeman. The 2004 trial I watched closely involved Sami al-Hussayen, a Saudi computer science doctoral student at the University of Idaho accused of providing technical assistance to Muslim charities that allegedly promoted violence and applauded attacks on the U.S. Persuaded by Nevin that al-Hussayen may have held offensive ideas but didnt constitute an imminent threat, the jury rejected the governments contention that the young man provided material support to terrorists. After studying all the evidence, I had to agree with the not-guilty verdict, even though I didnt share Nevins admiration for his client, a visitor who used a lot of his time in this country aiding venomous extremists. (In the end, as I wrote in a book called American Islam , a certain measure of rough justice was done; the U.S. deported al-Hussayen because of immigration violations.) Khalid Sheik Mohammed is different. I understand, in theory, why Nevin and his partner, Scott McKay, volunteered to take the case. They believe that the militarys version of a trial doesnt meet constitutional muster. This is not a system that is set up to deliver justice, Nevin told CBSs Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes.

Georgia Cappleman, chief assistant state attorney, said Thursday she could not speak to why there was a delay in prosecutors receiving the case. She also said there is no timeline for a decision on how to proceed with the case, though no decision is expected within the next few days. Typically, a delay can result from a lack of evidence in a case, or a lack of cooperation from the accuser. Florida State released a statement Wednesday saying that Winston's status with the team has not changed, and he is expected to start Saturday against Syracuse . Winston and the Seminoles practiced again Thursday, and coach Jimbo Fisher said the QB "took every snap, every rep, practiced extremely well this week." "He's been great," Fisher said. "He went out and practiced well and played well and eliminated, as far as I can understand, the distractions, and practiced well." Fisher had no comment when asked why he thought the case was being brought up again or how long Florida State has known about the incident. He did say players have rallied around each other this week. "We've had a lot of adversity," he said.

Lawyer: Two back QB's account

BOSTON--James Whitey Bulger will spend the rest of his life in prison, a federal judge ordered Thursday, telling the mobster that "thescope, the callousness, the depravity of your crimes are almost unfathomable." The sentencing capped a trial that detailed a decades-long reign of terror by the Boston crime boss. The trial came years after the crimes; Bulger, now 84, had been a fugitive for 16 years until his 2011 arrest in Santa Monica. Bulger, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, wearing glasses that obscured his bushy eyebrows, stared at the judge with a small frown on his face. It was a change from the previous day, when families of victims spoke to him, pleading him to look at them, but he only looked down. Judge Denise J. Casper sentenced Bulger to life in prison, plus five years, plus another life sentence, and ordered him to pay $19.5 million in restitution. [Updated 10:37 a.m. PST Nov. 14: Bulger plans to appeal his conviction, his lawyers said outside the courtroom following the sentencing. There are a number of important issues that he still thinks need to be told. Theres evidence and witnesses that he thinks should be made public, said attorney Hank Brennan.

San Diego Chargers Must Capitalize On Miami Dolphins? Ongoing Saga In Week 11

San Diego Sailor Surprises Son With Homecoming

After a long deployment, 3rd Class Petty Officer Cameron Griggs had his highly-anticipated homecoming, reuniting with his 5-year-old son and wife, who is 8 months pregnant. NBC 7 The Bolts will need to execute much better defensively than they did against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos just last week if they want to end up on the winning side of the scoreboard. Although they did make the final score respectable thanks to a stiffening defense and perked up offense in the second half, spotting the Dolphins any kind of lead will likely be to San Diegos detriment this week. The key for coming out victorious this Sunday for the Chargers is going to be finishing. Obviously that seems like a given in any game, but the Bolts have been troubled by an inability to put games away when they should easily roll on to the win. One big element of that is getting the running game going with the trio of ball carriers finding success against a Dolphins defense that has been quite generous against the run this season allowing 119.1 yards per game which ranks 25th in the NFL . Using Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead, and Ronnie Brown will help keep an already suspect run defense off balance and suck the safeties down into the box to open up the play-action passing attack. This game is going to come down to execution for the Chargers. Just how effectively the team exploits its advantages combined with how well it can mask its own deficiencies mainly a banged up offensive line and suspect secondary will be a key element toward deciding Sundays outcome. Look for the Chargers to make a case for why their playoff candidacy shouldnt be considered fraudulent just yet. Anthony Blake is a Senior Writer/Copy Editor for Rant Sports.

Miami Dolphins San Diego Chargers The other remains found nearby are believed to be those of their children, McMahon said. A McStay family members at the Friday news conference said the confirmation "gives us courage to know they were together and in better place." A motorcyclist found skeletal remains Monday morning in the area between Quarry and Stoddard Wells roads, just north of Victorville, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Victorville Station said. When investigators began to analyze the bones, they came across another set of remains in a shallow grave about 6 to 8 feet away, sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said. Investigators said they believed the remains were that of four people, and it appeared that the remains had been there for "an extended period of time." Friday's announcement, made at a news conference, is a key development in solving the 4-year-old mystery about what happened to the San Diego family ( pictured below ). McMahon said he could not confirm that the deaths are linked to a drug cartel after being asked several times about that possibility at the news conference. "We're looking at all options in investigating who the suspects are," said McMahon. "It's too early for us to identify anybody as a suspect." Joseph McStay, of Fallbrook, Calif. and his wife Summer were last seen with their two children, then ages 3 and 4, in February 2010, NBC7 San Diego reported. A group resembling the McStay family were spotted on surveillance footage crossing into Mexico at the San Ysidro border crossing on Feb.

No. 6 Arizona sets sights on San Diego State

With The Show roaring and the Aztecs within four points thanks to a Xavier Thames layup, the Wildcats were confronted with a baseline out of bounds situation late in the shot clock with 1:22 remaining. The solution: head coach Sean Miller drawing up a play that freed up freshman forward Aaron Gordon for an impressive alley-oop. Gordon missed the ensuing free throw but the play itself allowed Arizona to regain control of the proceedings, and theyd go on to win by a final score of 69-60 . Gordon, who made his first five shots, was all over the box score with 16 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots but he was just one of the key figures in the victory. Nick Johnson scored a game-high 23 points and shot 7-for-9 from inside of the arc, knocking down shots at key junctures in the game when it seemed as if SDSU was one stop away from making things even tighter. Freshman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson gave the Wildcats some valuable minutes off the bench, and point guard T.J. McConnell handled his responsibilities with the maturity many expected when the Duquesne transfer was handed the keys to the attack. But outside of Gordon and Johnsons offensive output, what Arizona was able to do defensively against an athletic San Diego State squad san diego district attorneys office may be the biggest thing to take out of the result. Theres no doubting the fact that the Aztecs have significant questions to answer offensively; the losses of both Jamaal Franklin and Chase Tapley are huge in that both players had the ability to get Steve Fishers team a basket when they needed one.

No. 6 Arizona passes a difficult test at San Diego State

Additional skeletal remains were found near the graves. Authorities said they had been there for an extended period. The McStays disappeared in February 2010, launching what San Diego sheriffs investigators called their most extensive missing-persons search ever. There were no signs of forced entry at the familys home in Fallbrook, about 55 miles north of San Diego, or in their SUV parked near the border. Authorities found rotten eggs on the kitchen counter of the home and two dogs in the backyard. Neither Joseph nor Summer had told family or friends they were leaving, and tens of thousands of dollars left in business bank accounts were never claimed. Investigators pursued hundreds of tips and eventually came to believe the family left voluntarily for Mexico. Investigators were convinced that four people seen on a dimly lit surveillance video walking into Tijuana, Mexico were the McStays. Some family members doubted the video shows the couple and their 3- and 4-year-old boys.

LEYTE, PHILIPPINES - NOVEMBER 15: People wait for flights out of Tacloban Airport in the early hours of the morning on November 15, 2013 in Leyte, Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan which ripped through Philippines over the weekend has been described as on of the most powerful typhoons ever to hit land, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. Countries all over the world have pledged relief aid to help support those affected by the typhoon however damage to the airport and roads have made moving the aid into the most affected areas very difficult. With dead bodies left out in the open air and very limited food, water and shelter, health concerns are growing. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images) T.J. McConnell, another new addition, who was brought in to play the point, is also performing well. McConnell clearly knows his role as he isn't scoring much, but with 14 assists in two games, he is more than capable of distributing to the Wildcats' scorers. Other than Gordon, that group has included returning starters Nick Johnson (12.5 ppg) and Brandon Ashley (13.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg), as well as center Kaleb Tarczewski (10.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg). Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (8.5 ppg) has provided a spark off the bench. Defense and transition offense were the key to the Aztecs' win over UC Riverside in the season opener. Leading the way were guards Thames and Winston Shepard. Thames scored a game-high 15 points and also had four steals, while Shepard added 10 points and did his best to facilitate the offense with five assists. Josh Davis (11 points, eight rebounds) a former double-double machine from Tulane, also had a hand in the victory.

San Diego Unified?s Big Challenge Hits Close To Home | Voice Of San Diego

Parents have many, many reasons for needing choice, and choice will still be an option for families, but we want the neighborhood schools to be an important option for our families, said Robles. The emphasis of the strategy is not to do things to restrict choice, Barrera said. It is to do things to improve the quality of neighborhood schools, to open up the possibility that parents are going to choose their neighborhood school. Creating quality schools in every neighborhood wont happen quickly, Barrera said. This is long-term work, which is why we talk about in terms of Vision 2020. Because its reversing decades of a strategy that was de-emphasizing neighborhood schools. Providing special programs that boost enrollment is also expensive. San Diego Unified doesnt have the funding to provide Mandarin classes at every school, for example, Barnett said. But I think magnet schools will always play an important role for parents who want additional enrichment beyond just a quality education. The goal is you should be able to have that, without having to choice to another school. The only way to effectively reduce choice, if you will, and more importantly, keep more kids in their neighborhood schools, is to improve the quality of the neighborhood schools, Barnett said. We have to improve the product.

After he continued, thinking the officer was joking, Unger was cited and told the fine would be $60. But Unger, who says he holds a graduate degree in mechanical engineering, discovered online the cost would actually be $280, and he decided to take the matter before a judge in the Clairemont Mesa Traffic Court. Turns out, he wouldn't need much of a defense for the ticket, which cited "playing ball" as the infraction. "Hmmm, now this is an interesting case," said the judge, according to the San Diego news website. San Diego Municipal Code 59.0502 says pedestrians in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot can't "intentionally throw, discharge, launch or spill any solid object (including footballs, baseballs, frisbees and other such devices) or liquid substance or otherwise cause subject or substance to be thrown, discharged, launched, spilled, or to become airborne." It's a mandate also in place at LP Field in Tennessee, Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and CenturyLink Field in Seattle, according to the U-T San Diego report. Unger said the judge told him if he pleaded guilty, he would suspend the fine.

Lawyer: Martin Left Because Of Persistent Bullying, Not Lack Of Toughness

Minor seeks action against lawyer's son for rape

Incognito is the lone player suspended as a result of this ordeal, though Cornwell's statement alleges multiple players mistreated Martin. CNN reached out multiple times to Incognito but hasn't received comment. But he did talk to CNN affiliate WSVN outside a doctor's office in Weston, Florida, on Tuesday, saying, "You know, I'm just trying to weather the storm right now. And this will pass." Incognito has a history of run-ins. They include a much-reported suspension from the University of Nebraska football team and his release by the NFL's St. Louis Rams in December 2009 after an in-game argument with then-head coach Steve Spagnuolo. More recently, in 2012, a volunteer at a golf tournament accused Incognito of inappropriately touching her with a golf club, according to a newly disclosed police report. No charges were filed, according to CNN affiliate WPLG-TV, which first obtained the police report.

Former Ukraine leader Yulia Tymoshenko?s lawyer is questioned, charged

In their defence, the Talwars' lawyer Satyaketu Singh submitted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) manipulated the 'tampered' report of the CDFD (Central DNA and Forensic Department), Hyderabad, regarding the pillow cover recovered from the room of Krishna, the Nepalese compounder of the dentist Rajesh Talwar, the father of the murdered girl. The defence lawyer said in 2011, it was claimed before the Allahabad High Court that in 2009, the CDFD had reported the pillow cover recovered from Krishna's room contained Hemraj's blood, and so evidence showed Krishna was involved in the crime. Aarushi murder case: Talwars' lawyer says CBI tampered with evidence But the CBI sought a clarification, after two years, from scientist S.R. Prasad of the CDFD, and it was found that the mention of Krishna was a "typographic" mistake. The lawyer pointed out, however, if it was a typographic error, then it had occurred at least 10 times in the report submitted to the court. An FIR was registered against the scientist at a Hyderabad police station under Sections 420 (cheating) and 467 (forgery) of the Indian Penal Code. The lawyer argued that the CBI tampered with a seized article of evidence, a golf club, while it was in its custody. He said that the CBI, in 2013, presented one independent witness named Laxman before the court, and that witness admitted that the Talwars' driver, Umesh, had identified the golf sticks in August 2010. The entire stock of golf sticks was seized by the CBI in 2009.

Lawyer for Ukraine's Tymoshenko questioned by prosecutor

Yevgenia Tymoshenko (L), daughter of jailed opposition leader and former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, and Sergiy Vlasenko, the lawyer of Yulia Tymoshenko, attend a session of parliament in Kiev November 8, 2013. REUTERS/Gleb Garanich She alleged that the lawyer's son raped her for several days and warned her against informing anybody. When she developed stomach pain two months later, her family admitted her to a private hospital at Bhadravathi where she underwent an abortion on September 3. The lawyer and his wife, also an advocate, pressured the girl, a class IX student, to file a police complaint falsely implicating a youth who resides near their house. Police registered a complaint and sent the girl to a Shimoga remand home. Police say when the girl was produced before a magistrate, she repeated the claim in her complaint: that the youth had raped her. On returning home after a 20-day stay at the rehabilitation centre, the girl narrated her story to her brother, who approached the DSS and lodged a fresh police complaint on October 15. DSS leaders urged police to reinvestigate the case and sought justice for the tribal girl.

Russias Investigative Committee announced last week that they have started investigating Murad Musaev, a lawyer who has made a career of defending Chechens in high-profile cases , for attempting to bribe a trial witness. The witness claims that Musaev offered him 15,000 rubles (approximately $500) to produce false testimony during a February 2013 murder trial of Colonel Budanov's alleged killer. Budanov, who had served 9 years in prison for the wartime kidnapping and murder of a young Chechen woman (he claimed she was a sniper), was murdered in 2011, shortly after his release. The Miami Dolphins have suspended Pro Bowl offensive lineman Richie Incognito following allegations of misconduct from teammate Jonathan Martin. Incognito played for the University of Nebraska before he was drafted in 2005 by the St. Louis Rams. He also played for the Buffalo Bills in 2009 before joining the Dolphins in 2010. EU negotiators are due in Kiev from Tuesday in a further round of talks aimed at securing her release to Germany for medical treatment for back pains. "He (Vlasenko) is suspected of carrying out physical harm to his former wife and also of carrying out acts of violence in his relations with her. A formal questioning is taking place," the prosecutor's press service said. There was a possibility that Vlasenko could be formally arrested, the spokeswoman said. Vlasenko appeared to suggest that he was being targeted because he was one of the main actors in the defense of Tymoshenko, the chief political opponent of President Viktor Yanukovich. "Repression is increasing," he said in a text message to Reuters. Earlier he confirmed simply that he was at the prosecutor's office. The European Union has warned Yanukovich it will not sign the association deal with Ukraine, which will mark a historic shift away from the patronage of its old Soviet master Russia, unless Tymoshenko is freed.

Lawyer banned for three years

I had five weeks paid vacation, mango and banana trees in my yard and went scuba diving nearly every weekend. I'd like to say it was some sort of insight about the Meaning Of Life or a sudden urge to commune with fish that got me moving. In reality, it was a terrific combination of terrible things in the romance, personal well-being and employment departments that left me wanting to flee the city -- and fast. And as it happened in November/December of 2001, the moment these terrible things were all converging, I just lucked out: The person who'd been hired for the job I was eventually offered on the island -- a lawyer with the local Supreme Court -- was disbarred. Since she was no longer eligible (at least that's what the court's HR person told me), she was out, and I was on my way to Saipan, Micronesia's second-most-populated island. (Guam's the first.

Aarushi murder case: Talwars' lawyer says CBI tampered with evidence

Aarushi murder case: Talwars Gary Edward Sawyer, a former partner at Gascoigne Wicks, was charged with two counts of misconduct, dating back to 2004, and one charge of negligence by the lawyers disciplinary tribunal. He pleaded guilty to the misconduct charges and was found guilty of negligence. In July 2004, Sawyer forged the signatures of clients David and Jillian Moorehouse on water permit transfer documents. The Moorehouses subsequently sued Gascoigne Wicks and a five-year High Court battle followed. In 2007, Sawyer admitted in court forging the signatures on the document despite having authority to sign on behalf of the Moorhouses, Fairfax reported at the time. In a separate incident, Sawyer acted negligently when he failed to advise clients of the need for personal guarantees during a commercial property sale. He then created false file notes in an attempt to cover up his negligence - behaviour that amounted to the second misconduct charge. The New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal has suspended Sawyer for 36 months, starting on Monday. New Zealand Law Society president Chris Moore said the charges were "very serious" and had come close to justifying a total ban. "The tribunal said it had decided by a very fine margin not to strike Mr Sawyer off," he said. "It is crucial that anyone who uses a lawyer is able to expect a high degree of skill and competence in whatever field of law is involved." Sawyer has been able to practise for the nine-and-a-half years since his first offence in 2004. Mr Moore said the disciplinary action wasn't taken earlier because of court action.

Alan Dershowitz, Lawyer for Julian Assange, At GW Tonight

The star's high-powered attorney, Bert Fields, is taking issue with details from a deposition that was made public this week, in which a lawyer for the publisher says Cruise likened his career to being a combat soldier. "The assertions that Tom Cruise likened making a movie to being at war in Afghanistan is a gross distortion of the record," Fields said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. "What Tom said, laughingly, was that sometimes, 'That's what it feels like.' " Cruise's legal team says the quotes made public by their opponents in the $50 million fight are only part of a much longer deposition. They also say an unreleased video made of the proceeding clearly shows that Cruise wasn't being serious. "As the video shows, he and the lawyer were laughing at his answer, and, when asked in the next question if the situations were comparable, Tom said, 'Oh, come on,' meaning of course not," Fields continues. The lawyer adds that the star never intended to disrespectful to the armed forces. Says Fields: "Tom is a staunch supporter of our troops and would never say that making a movie was even remotely comparable to fighting in Afghanistan."

Tom Cruise's Lawyer: Statements Comparing Stardom to War a 'Distortion'

Serhiy Vlasenko , Mrs. Tymoshenko s longtime lawyer and ally, was charged with assaulting his former spouse and was being questioned late in the evening, prosecutor Ruslan Demyanyuk told reporters, according to the Interfax news agency. An ally of Mrs. Tymoshenko s said earlier that Mr. Vlasenko had texted him that he had been arrested, but then prosecutors said that wasnt the case. There was no immediate comment from Mr. Vlasenko on the charges, but he previously has denied similar accusations connected to his divorce. The opposition saw Mr. Vlasenko s questioning as a sign of President Viktor Yanukovych s reluctance to fulfill the EU s demand to free Mrs. Tymoshenko , his archrival a condition for signing an association agreement with Ukraine , a precursor to eventual EU membership.

The Chargers short passing game can be a very effective tool in controlling the clock and giving the defense much-needed rest, but unfortunately cant always be counted on to score points. By slowly moving down the field with short gains, converting on multiple third downs is key for the playcalling to work. The Chargers have a 47% conversion rate on third downs this season, which is good for second in the league behind the Broncos. However, asking your offense to consistency convert three or four third downs on a drive when every NFL team converts less than 50% of their third downs isnt a recipe for success. The Chargers have proven they can move the ball and win the time of possession battle this way, but have stalled far too many times in the redzone this season. Against a juggernaut offense like the Broncos, you cant expect to win by kicking field goals instead of scoring touchdowns. Despite having the personnel geared towards a short passing game (an aging Antonio Gates and possession-type receivers in Vincent Brown and Keenan Allen), the Chargers still need to mix in more vertical routes to give Philip Rivers the option of throwing deep to score. Scoring touchdowns needs to be the primary focus when the offense steps onto the field, not simply controlling the clock and keeping the opposing offense off the field.

San Diego Chargers Can?t Always Rely on Short Passing Game

Philip Rivers San Diego Chargers We have to find a better identity on offense, Tenyer said. Our defense had some big stops early, but we got the ball back and didn't come away with any points. Morehead State's final two games will both be played at Jayne Stadium. The Eagles host Butler on Nov. 16 and Charlotte on Nov. 23. Both contests are slated to begin at 1 p.m. We've had three hard lessons in a row with Dayton, Drake and now San Diego, Tenyer added. and Mexican researchers are joining forces on a project that looks at San Diego County, Imperial County and Baja California as a single economic entity. It is the first cluster study of its kind on the U.S.-Mexico border, its authors said, and its aim is to paint a detailed picture of the regions combined strengths and future potential. You pretend like the border doesnt exist, said Christina Luhn, executive director of the CaliBaja Bi-National Mega-Region, which works in partnership with six economic development groups in the U.S. and Mexico. There have been cluster studies on both sides of the border, but this is the first time were treating the economies on both sides as if its one economy. Though the study is not finished, it has already produced some interesting findings: Manufacturing is far more important to the CaliBaja region than commonly known, and the size of the audio-visual cluster is huge, Luhn said. Nobody had this idea that right here, on the California-Baja California border, is 40 percent of the audio-visual manufacturing in the United States and Mexico, she added.

San Diego's Petco Park to host 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas first round match between the U.S. and Great Britain, January 31 - February 2

So far, losses have been adding up at a staggering rate, but the record wasn't the main reason for Sveum's dismissal. Player development was. Castro and Rizzo, two key young players who have long-term contracts, each took a step back this year. Pitcher Jeff Samardzija also had an up-and-down season. With Baez, Soler, Almora and Bryant are on the way, the Cubs made it clear they want to provide the right environment for their young players to develop. Getting the most out of Castro, Rizzo and to some degree Samardzija will be the most immediate task for the new manager, assuming they're not traded. Castro continues to be a head scratcher, prone to lapses in the field, and he couldn't make up for it at the plate. The two-time All-Star's average has been in a steady decline, going from a high of .307 in 2011 to a career-low .245 this year. Rizzo batted just .233 with 23 homers and 80 RBIs in 160 games, not what the Cubs were looking for after a promising season the year before.

This team has shown that it can hang with some of the best teams the conference has to offer. Also, it would probably help their case if this one didn't come down to a field goal. If that's the case, the Aztecs are in trouble -- they haven't converted a FG since Sept. 28 vs. New Mexico State.

UC San Diego plans to open stem cell center

Wed Nov 6, 2013 6:16pm EST San Diego's Hotel/Motel Industry Stuck in Neutral New Data Shows Employment in Lodging Industry Lagging Most Other Metropolitan Areas SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 6, 2013) - The National University System Institute for Policy Research (NUSIPR) released today a policy brief comparing San Diego employment in the lodging industry against both the national yearly average as well as seven other major metropolitan areas that compete with San Diego for leisure travelers. These comparisons show that this critical industry for San Diego is stuck in neutral. Employment in the accommodations sector is still only at 90 percent as seen in 2007 -- the last full year before the onset of the Great Recession. Meanwhile, employment in the sector nationally stands at 97 percent of peak. Four competitors -- Miami, Orlando, Honolulu and Los Angeles--have all seen employment rebound to above 2007 levels. Indeed, only Phoenix is lagging behind San Diego, with the Valley of the Sun standing at only 87 percent of 2007 levels. "NUSIPR believes part of San Diego's lag reflects the advantages that competitor regions have received from the on-going theme park arms race between Disney and Comcast, which has seen billions invested into tourism infrastructure in Central Florida and the greater Los Angeles area," said Erik Bruvold, president of the National University System Institute for Policy Research. "San Diego, in contrast, has not seen nearly the same level of investment in the infrastructure that drives visitors to vacation in a particular region." Legal disputes surrounding San Diego's tourism marketing district and convention center expansion are likely to continue to act as a drag on the sector's recovery. At present, more than one out of every 10 jobs in the region is tied to San Diego's hospitality industry.

NFL taps NY attorney to investigate Dolphins bullying

Just before 2 a.m., we took a several hundred vote lead to become the next Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The chairman of the Virginia Republican Party, Pat Mullins, announced that Obenshain would make no comment because the party was preparing for a recount. Obenshain appeared to be headed for victory early Tuesday evening on the basis of his double-digit advantage over Herring among independent voters. Among independents, preliminary exit poll data showed Obenshain with a 16percentage-point lead over Herring. He also ran up big margins in solidly Republican central and western Virginia. But Herring closed the gap, buoyed by big majorities in his Northern Virginia base. He won Fairfax County by 20 points and his home county of Loudoun by 6points. He also won Arlington and Alexandria by margins of 3-1 and topped Obenshain handily in Norfolk and Newport News. Polls before the election showed a tight race. Obenshain ran a careful, relatively gaffe-free campaign to retain an office the GOP has held since 1994. His campaign glossed over divisive social issues and presented him as a less-polarizing figure than Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli II or E.W. Jackson, the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor. Obenshain was also able to keep his distance from the fallout generated by Gov.

Former US Attorney Paul Charlton Joins Steptoe

CST, November 6, 2013 Republican Mark Obenshain held a 219 http://www.kpbs.org/news/2013/nov/05/san-diego-mayoral-candidates-lose-rules-no-bs-deba/ vote lead in the race to be Virginia's next Attorney General, with results in from all the state's 2,558 precincts. The count is even narrower than Bob McDonnell 's 327-vote lead over Creigh Deeds in the 2005 race to be attorney general, but it's as certain to end in a recount. Meanwhile, of the four House of Delegates seats where less than 1 percentage point separated the candidates with a handful of precincts still outstanding last night, the GOP has held onto three. One race, where John Bell is challenging Del. David Ramadan, R-Loudoun is still neck and neck, with one precinct still to be counted. Ramadan has a slight lead and the precinct is strongly Republican. The margins in all four are less than 1 percentage point, however, which gives the loser the right to petition for a recount. After a night that saw Democrats elected governor and lieutenant governor, Republicans hoped Obenshain could prevent a sweep of statewide executive branch offices. In Hampton Roads, Herring performed well in Newport News, Hampton and Norfolk, while Obenshain won the majority of votes in Virginia Beach and narrowly carried Chesapeake. The race between Obenshain and Herring, a Loudoun County Democrat, was largely defined by the current occupant of the office, Republican Ken Cuccinelli, who lost his bid for governor Tuesday evening. Obenshain and Herring both sought at times to distance themselves from Cuccinelli, including his controversial decision to sue the University of Virginia to obtain a former professor's research on climate change. Both men said they would promote transparency in office, and argue for limiting the amount of gifts state lawmakers can receive after Gov.

"Counsel spent inordinate amounts of time with Celeste (Caulley) Bowman and shunned the rest of his investigators and assistants, leading to mistakes." - Judge John Martin The Ohio public defender successful fought for a new trial for Owen's client, Robert Caulley, who was sentenced to 25 years to life in the killing of his mother and father, the report said. Caulley maintains his innocence. Owen reportedly said he fought hard for Caulley, but a judge in the Franklin County Common Pleas Court went forward with the new trail. Owen's website has an endorsement by Playboy Magazine that calls him a "renowned criminal defense lawyer." Owen "had been distracted to an extent that greatly hindered his preparation and trial performance," Judge John Martin said. "Paul's arrival represents an important addition to our Phoenix office, by continuing the growth of practices in Phoenix that have local, national and global reach," said Bruce Converse, managing partner of Steptoe's Phoenix office. "Paul joins two recent exciting additions to our office, former Congressman John Shadegg and former FERC Commissioner Marc Spitzer." Steptoe Chair Roger Warin commented: "We are delighted that Paul has joined us. He has a strong and varied background in both civil and criminal investigation. He can draw upon his experience as a federal prosecutor to advise companies that might be facing both criminal and civil exposure, as well as handle their large-scale internal investigations. His addition also adds a top-shelf criminal defense attorney to our white-collar practice west of the Mississippi." Over the past 18 months, Steptoe's white-collar practice has expanded its depth and reach with several key additions. Earlier this year, it added Jason Weinstein, former deputy assistant attorney general of the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) Criminal Division to the Washington office, and Patrick Rappo, the former joint head of Bribery and Corruption of the UK's Serious Fraud Office to the London office. In July 2012, it established a Midwest presence with Chris Niewoehner, a former assistant US attorney for the Northern District of Illinois who served as a lead trial attorney in the prosecution and conviction of former Governor Rod Blagojevich. Also in 2012, Michelle Levin in the firm's New York office was elected to the partnership. With Mr. Charlton's arrival, Steptoe's white-collar practice, which was named a Law360 "White Collar Group of the Year" in 2011 and 2012, includes nine former federal prosecutors with extensive trial experience and a host of lawyers with substantial experience in other government positions. "I am honored to be joining such a well-renowned firm with its talented roster of lawyers," said Mr. Charlton. "I am truly looking forward to working with my new colleagues, as well as using the national platform that Steptoe offers to expand my practice beyond Arizona." Fluent in Spanish, Mr. Charlton has been deployed by the DOJ on numerous occasions to provide instruction to Latin American prosecutors and judges on the American criminal justice system. An adjunct professor at Arizona State University's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Mr. Charlton was named "Prosecutor of the Year" by the Arizona State Bar a year after leaving the US Attorney's Office. He has been recommended by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, and Southwest Super Lawyers, among other accolades. Mr. Charlton received his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Arizona.

Attorney from Springfield could become federal judge

Swallow also knew that St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson had criminal and civil cases against him in 2011. Johnson accused Swallow of helping arrange a deal in an attempt to derail a Federal Trade Commission investigation in Johnson's Internet marketing company in 2010. An Oct. 17, 2012, email from Snow to Johnson asks him to postpone a deposition of Swallow in the criminal case until after the November election, when Swallow won the attorney general's race. In December 2012, Swallow obtained a deathbed declaration from Provo businessman Richard M. Rawle saying Swallow did nothing inappropriate when he introduced Johnson to him as someone who could lobby the FTC on Johnson's behalf. Committee members during Tuesday's meeting also questioned the thoroughness of the Justice Department investigation into Swallow that ended with no criminal charges being filed. Rep. Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton, said it seems that the DOJ didn't seek the information the House committee wants the attorney general to turn over.

The AGs agreement will dismantle the illegal operation and prohibit its owners from running gambling facilities or laundering gambling proceeds through bank accounts located in Oklahoma. There are severe and sustained consequences for breaking the law in Oklahoma, and I hope this sends a message to anyone considering profiting from illegal gambling, Attorney General Pruitt said. I appreciate the cooperation of the State of Florida and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. With their assistance, we were able to secure criminal and civil charges for these individuals and shut down their illegal gaming and money laundering activities. Chase and Kristin Burns were arrested in March following several years of investigation by the Oklahoma Attorney Generals Office, the OSBI, the IRS, the Florida Attorney Generals Office, the Seminole County (Florida) Sheriffs Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Following their arrest, they were prosecuted criminally by the Florida Attorney Generals Office with the Oklahoma Attorney Generals Office seizing their laundered money from accounts in Oklahoma. Chase Burns, the owner of International Internet Technologies (IIT), was accused of supplying illegal gaming software to outlets in Florida, violating the states gaming laws. According to the affidavit, Burns and other owners of the gaming units claimed the money played and lost on the games was to be donated to a veterans group, Allied Veterans, which actually received less than 1 percent of the proceeds. Burns pleaded no contest in his Florida criminal case after being indicted on charges of racketeering, money laundering, keeping a gambling house, the manufacturing or sale of slot machines and conducting a lottery.

Attorney General secures forfeiture funds; shuts down Anadarko illegal gambling ring

(AP Photo) DAVIE, Fla. A leadership vacuum may have contributed to the troubled relationship between Miami Dolphins offensive linemen Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, which has left both players sidelined and the team in turmoil. The ongoing saga has raised questions about whether coach Joe Philbin and his staff were negligent in allowing issues between Martin and Incognito to fester. Current and ex-players around the NFL say the situation reflects a lack of leadership because teammates of Martin and Incognito didn't intervene. NFL officials are trying to determine who knew what when, and whether Incognito harassed or bullied Martin. A second-year tackle from Stanford, Martin left the team last week and is with his family in California to undergo counseling for emotional issues. Incognito has been suspended indefinitely. A senior partner in a New York law firm with experience in sports cases was appointed Wednesday by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to investigate possible misconduct in the Dolphins' workplace and prepare a report that will be made public. "If the review reveals anything that needs to be corrected, we will take all necessary measures to fix it," Philbin said. "I believe in our players, I believe in our staff, I believe in our organization, the people around here. I know why I got into coaching, and I believe in the things that I've done." Two people familiar with the situation said Wednesday that Martin talked of quitting football earlier in his pro career before leaving the team last week.

Reams has been the county attorney for 15 years. Attorney General Joe Foster and U.S. Attorney John Kacavas made a joint announcement about the unseating of Reams and his deputy during a press conference in Rockingham County Superior Court. Foster said a former employee made a complaint to his office, which set off the investigation. "The allegations were significant," Foster said. The interview with the former employee "led us to a number of other former employees we interviewed along with agents from the FBI," Foster said. "The interviews corroborated the allegations made by the initial complainant and raised other issues." Foster said the investigation led him to suspend the prosecutorial duties of Reams, who has held the post of county attorney since being first elected in 1998. Last night, county commissioners were informed about the investigation by the Attorney General's Office and agreed to place Reid an administrative leave. Senior assistant attorney general James Boffetti has been named interim county attorney while the investigation continues, according to Foster. FBI agents and investigators interviews of the staff and the assistant county attorneys at the office began this morning. "We are hopeful they will be completed in short order," Foster said.
